Bill Fletcher died peacefully in his sleep a few days shy of his 99th birthday. Bill was born in Liverpool England, son of William Fletcher and Marie Irene Corcoran. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Liverpool in 1942 and then worked on the PLUTO project to deploy a pipeline under the ocean for fuel to be delivered to France after the D-Day Invasion. Bill met his wife, Ellen (“Nellie”, Helen) Rourke (6/1/2021 – 7/14/2003) in college and they married on August 8, 1945. Bill worked as a metallurgist and in the steel industry during his career. Jobs took him and Helen and family around the globe for some interesting adventures that the family loves to recall, spending 3 years in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) and 3 years in Colombia before settling in Cleveland in 1966 and then California in 1978. Bill loved golf, tennis and tinkering/building things in his always well stocked workshops.
Bill and Helen had 6 children: Anne Irene Fletcher (Tony Perez), Catharine Helen Szlembarski (David), Mary Frances Simon (Edward), Peter William (Patricia), Alan Joseph (Ellen), and Margaret Clare Brosnan (Thomas). He had 9 grandchildren: Damien Jones, Frances Jones Valera, Erin Jones Stone, Dylan Alexander Simon, Lucy Simon Fujii, Ryan William Fletcher, Emily Fletcher Kaestner, Sonia Kay Brosnan and Nina Kay Brosnan. He also had 4 great-grandchildren: Kira Valera, Lily Valera, Caitlyn Fletcher and Jeffrey Fletcher.
Private family services have been scheduled. Donations can be made to Pathways Hospice (pathwayshealth.org), where his wife Helen volunteered.
Lord, may the fairways be smooth and wide; may the rough be low and manageable; and may the greens be perfect so that the first putt is sufficient. Amen.
