Wai Ying Chew

September 7, 1934 ~ March 26, 2018 (age 83)
Wai Ying Chew
Resident of Cupertino

Wai Ying Chew peacefully passed away the evening of March 26, 2018 in her nursing home at the Forum at Rancho San Antonio. For the last two years, Wai Ying battled valiantly against the debilitating effect of several strokes compounded by acute dementia.

A native of Kowloon, China, Wai Ying immigrated to the Bay Area upon marrying her husband, Joseph Chew. They were happily married for 40 years until he passed away in 1997. Wai Ying was first and foremost a wife and a mother, raising three boys, keeping her husband well-fed, and teaching Chinese lessons to kids in the neighborhood. When her youngest reached high school age, she obtained a basic degree in electronics from San Jose City College and landed a job with Xerox in Silicon Valley as an assembler. She was very proud of her work at Xerox, eventually becoming a quality assurance inspector, and receiving a number of awards over a 30-year career.

Wai Ying loved life in general and enjoyed any sort of social gathering that had friendly people to chat with and good food to eat. Amongst her favorites were events in her local community put on by the Chinese Flower Growers Association, especially the Chinese New Year celebrations. She was a wonderful cook and was renown amongst family and friends for the scrumptious cookies that she baked for people at Christmas. She enjoyed traveling to Vancouver to visit with her sister and other family members, always returning with boxes of delicious pastries. She was a wonderful mother-in-law to Dianna and a loving, watchful grandmother. Wai Ying was fiercely competitive, and in her later years became a force to be reckoned with on the bocce ball court, where she made many new friends who admired her newfound skills and enjoyed her warm and ever-constant smiles. Wai Ying will be greatly missed.

Wai Ying, whose eldest son Curren Chew passed away in 2009, is survived by her sister, Lai Fong Lew, her two sons David and Lewis Chew, her daughter-in-law Dianna Chew, and her two grandchildren Ryan Chew and Emma Chew.
