Veldon Martin

June 13, 1936 ~ September 7, 2022 (age 86)

It saddens the Martin family’s heart that Vel Martin has passed away.  He had survived the effects of a stroke for many years and passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family.

Vel was born in the small mining community of Conda, Idaho. His parents Catherine (Kate) and Oliver (Cobb) Martin moved the family into Soda Springs where Vel attended school.  In the late 50’s, Kate and Cobb moved to Butte, Montana and Vel followed shortly thereafter.

While working at the Miner’s Bank of Butte, Vel met Carleen (Hicks).  Their marriage survived 64 years until Vel’s passing.  While in Butte, son Terry and daughter Sallie were born.  It was the 60’s and there were many, many close friends to keep each other company during the cold winters.   However, California called the family in the early 70’s.  Vel and his family settled in Los Gatos, CA where they lived for over 30 years.

The banking life was always for Vel.  He joined American Savings (Washington Mutual) and spent the rest of his career there.

Vel was always the first person to volunteer to help with Terry and Sallie’s events and activities.  He was a Boy Scout troop leader who saw 3 boys (including Terry) achieve Eagle Scout status.  Everyone knew who our father was because of his involvement in his children’s’ lives and the community. This involvement included his work supporting Kiwanis, The Elks Lodge, the Junior League and many years with the Fiesta de Artes Festival in Los Gatos.

Vel is survived by his brother, Chuk Turley, his wife Carleen, son Terry and daughter-in-law Kim, daughter Sallie and Vel’s two grandchildren Brandon Martin and Tyler Pickett.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Vel’s honor to the Stroke Awareness Foundation
