Tina Vander Veen
Resident of San Jose, California
November 18, 1923 – August 28, 2018
Heaven has gained another saint to sing in the heavenly choir. Tina Vander Veen passed away peacefully on August 28, 2018. She was the matriarch of her large family whom she loved deeply, and she was loved and cherished in return.
Tryntje (Tina) Vander Veen (Boersma) was born in Marrum, Friesland, in The Netherlands on November 18, 1923, to Leviena van der Wal and Cornelis Boersma. She and her identical twin sister were the youngest of seven siblings. Tina grew up in The Netherlands. As a teenager she lived through World War II and the German occupation of The Netherlands.
In 1951 Tina immigrated to Ontario, Canada, where she married Siebe (Sid) Vander Veen. They had five children. Tina and Sid farmed 60 acres of land.
In 1964 the family immigrated again, to San Jose, California. Tina was a homemaker and cleaned houses for others until she was 76 years old.
Twelve grandchildren were born. The grandchildren used the Friesian word for Grandma, which is Beppe. Tina’s title of Beppe was an honor bestowed on her not only by her own grandchildren and then great grandchildren, but by many other children in her life as well. Her grandchildren’s friends called her Beppe. Some of the children at church called her Beppe. She loved children and was a much loved Beppe to many!
Tina was a Godly woman of great faith. She attended the San Jose Christian Reformed church for over 54 years and rarely missed a church service. She sang in the choir, attended bible studies, worked in the nursery, served in the kitchen. Any need that she could fill, she gladly did with a smile on her face.
Tina and Sid were married for 49 years when Sid became ill in August 2000. Tina decided that it was time to retire from her housecleaning career so that she could take care of him….she was 76 years old at that time. Her beloved husband of 49 years passed away in November 2000.
Tina worked hard and accomplished so much in her life, but she was humble, appreciative and gracious. Tina was a wonderful caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She cherished her family, her friends and her church. She was a pillar of strength and a beacon of love for her family. She showed three generations below her what unconditional and selfless love for your family and your friends looks like.
She was a Godly example to everyone she touched. She leaves a legacy of love and faithfulness to her Lord and Savior. She truly was a good and faithful servant and we rejoice knowing that she has received her eternal reward and is rejoicing with the Lord in Heaven.
Tina was predeceased by her husband, Siebe (Sid) and her infant son, Theodore. She is survived by four children: Peter (Sherry) Van Der Veen of San Jose, Laviena (Len) Koolstra of San Jose, Cornell (Harriet) Vander Veen of Morgan Hill, Allan (Judy) Vander Veen of San Jose. Tina is survived by 12 grandchildren: Shaun Van Der Veen (Krystle Ulanday), Jeremy (Michelle) Van Der Veen, Brett (Allison) Van Der Veen, Jennifer Woods (Robert Herbst), Nathan Woods (Jennifer Cliffard), Brandon Woods (Natalie Lai), Anthony (Erin) Van Der Veen, Amber (Daniel) Mazzella, Aaron (Brianna) van der Veen, Jason (Laura) Vander Veen, Paul (Justine) Vander Veen and Isaac Vander Veen. Tina is also survived by 22 great-grandchildren. Tina was predeceased by four brothers and is survived by her twin sister, Margaret Boersma, and her older sister, Elizabeth Soorsma.
