Long time Redwood City Resident Phyllis June Sutherland, born to Norman and Sarah Gerring of Rochester New York., passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of September 24th, 2018.
Mrs. Sutherland was the 3rd child of 8. She graduated from Franklin HS and later attended the State teachers college of Brockport, NY. Phyllis moved to California to earn her degree from San Francisco State University where she majored in Education with a minor in Psychology. While attending SF University she was an active member of Delta Phi Upsilon, Alpha Chi Epsilon, Kappa Delta Pi and CSTA.
After college she married the love of her life and late husband of 43 years, Leslie Bernard Sutherland. Phyllis and Leslie's retirement years were spent traveling the United States with the Escapees RV Club spending many summers at Rainbow’s End, Texas and winters in Redwood City.
Phyllis is survived by her two sisters, Barbara Amico of North Carolina and Sandy Ryley of South Carolina, and several west coast relations. Family and Neighbors alike will remember her fondly for the many years of hosting massive family Thanksgivings, her long service at Henry Ford Elementary School as a first grade teacher and her iconic lime green house on the corner of Goodwin and Alameda de las Palmas. She has had a lasting effect on many in the community and will be greatly missed by those that knew her and loved her.
Per Mrs. Sutherlands wishes, she will be buried at sea with her late husband. All friends and family members are invited to join us for this celebration of her life.
