Mary Dolores Ridgely, age 90, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2018 at The Terraces of Los Gatos. She was born February 3, 1928, in Campbell CA, to Fred H. Smith and Maude Dorothy (Davis) Smith.
Dolores attended Moreland Elementary and then Campbell High School. She graduated from San Jose State University with a BA in Occupational Therapy and then continued on to get her Teachers Credential. She taught kindergarten at Almaden Elementary School for 34 years.
She married Stephen S. Ridgely in 1949 in Campbell, CA. They lived in Los Gatos, CA for over 60 years. Dolores and Steve loved to travel. They lived in Dublin, Ireland for two years while Steve taught at Trinity College.
Dolores loved to garden. She grew tomatoes, Sugar Snap Peas, plums, apricots, and blackberries. She loved to play tennis and ski. Dolores loved the San Jose Sharks and the Golden State Warriors. When she moved to the Terraces of Los Gatos, at the age of 86 Dolores loved to play Wii bowling with her great friends.
Dolores was philanthropic throughout her lifetime. She supported such causes as The Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation and Maryknoll Sisters.
Dolores was surrounded by her loving family throughout her life. She appreciated and encouraged her young family members in their talents and interests. She also listened and supported them when they needed her.
She is proceeded in death by her husband, Stephen S. Ridgely, her parents and her two brothers, John and Francis Smith.
Dolores is survived by her two sisters Regina Koehler and Margaret Crisham, and her sister-in-law, Joyce Ridgely. She is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews, 31 Great nieces and nephews, and 12 Great-Great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Darling-Fischer Chapel of the Hills, 615 N. Santa Cruz Ave, Los Gatos, CA 95030. Viewing is from 4 pm to 8 pm, with a rosary from 6-7 pm on Monday April 23, 2018.
Funeral mass will be held at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, 219 Bean Ave Los Gatos, CA 95030, on Tuesday April 24, 2018 at 11 am.
Burial will follow at Los Gatos Memorial Park, 2255 Los Gatos Almaden Road San Jose, CA 95124.
The family would also like to say a special Thank You to The Terrace of Los Gatos and all of their wonderful nurses, CNA’s and staff for their attentiveness and loving care of Dolores. We would also like to thanks all of the wonderful residents at The Terraces for their love and friendship to Dolores.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dolores’ name to The Nature Conservancy.
