We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Darling & Fischer Chapel of the Hills
Mary (Kate) was born on July 12th, 1940, in Minneapolis, MN. Kate’s early years were spent on the family farm where she was responsible for daily chores including wrangling and sometimes dispatching a chicken for the family’s dinner.
Eventually, the family moved to Richmond, CA where Kate graduated from El Cerrito High School in 1958. After graduation, Kate entered the workforce, and it was at one of her early jobs that she met her first husband and father of her sons - John.
After getting married, Kate took on the role of homemaker and mother – a role that she excelled in and that brought her much satisfaction. After living in Belmont and Ladera, Kate, John and the kids settled in Los Gatos in the early 70’s. They were soon joined by Kate’s niece Elizabeth (Liz) McLaren.
Years later, after Kate and John had divorced, Kate met and married her second husband, Otto, a retired Navy Chief. Kate and Otto managed to get both John and Dan through high school and off to college and then took advantage of their newly discovered free time. Travel, especially to Ireland, marathon cribbage sessions and visiting grandchildren became some of the activities they enjoyed together among many others.
Kate passed away on Memorial Day after a recent fall and related hospitalization. She was a feisty and loved proponent of her family, friends and her Norwegian and Irish heritage.
Kate is survived by her two sons Dan Henriksen and John Henriksen (Charene). Three grandchildren Jessica, Rachel and Natalie, brother Gary Gorman, and niece Elizabeth McLaren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Otto, parents William and Harriet and several of her brothers and sisters.
A visitation and celebration of life will take place on Wednesday, June 8th from 1:00PM-4:00PM at Chapel of the Hills in Los Gatos.
