Lois Elva Selfridge,79, passed peacefully knowing how much she was loved by her family on September 1, 2023 at El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos. She was born June 9, 1944 in Dayton, Ohio to Catherine and Edwin Schueren.
The Schueren family moved to Walnut Creek, California in 1948 and then to Los Gatos, California in 1959. She would remain in the San Jose/Los Gatos area until 1991. Lois graduated from Camden High School in 1962 and then moved on to San Jose City College where she received an Associate in Arts degree in Dental Assisting. Shortly thereafter, Lois met her partner and best friend for life Bob Selfridge and they were married November 6, 1965. Lois and Bob welcomed their first son, Kevin, on July 17, 1969 followed by their second son, Kirk, on June 18, 1971. Lois was the office manager for a dental office in San Jose for over 10 years and then became the office manager for Bob when they moved to Penn Valley, California to open a kitchen cabinet business in 1991. Bob and Lois moved to Chandler Arizona in 1999 while Lois continued to manage Selfridge Construction functioning as Bob’s forever sidekick on the job sites. After Bob’s passing, Lois returned home in 2009 to Los Gatos to reside with Kevin and his family. Kirk and his family were excited to have her so close by.
Lois was an adamant sports fan who supported all bay area teams and loved to sit and watch games at home. In 1973, she once stood in line for the Oakland A’s World Series game with her two toddler sons for what was to be the series clinching game against the Mets. She was a loyal A’s fan but was known to choose which team she would root for based on who had the cutest player. It was this way of choosing that caused a split in the house in 1989 because she liked Will Clark and thus rooted for the Giants that series. Lois was always at every baseball, football, soccer and basketball game and taught her boys how to handle their emotions and play in a dignified manner. She continued to attend every sporting event for her grandchildren with her collapsible camping chair, a blanket, and her ice cold water bottle. Throughout her lifetime, she must have attended at least a thousand games supporting her boys and grandchildren.
Lois was a loving and loyal wife to Bob for 38 years and is now once again by his side as she was for all those years. She is survived by two sisters, Nancy and Janet, two sons, Kevin and Kirk, two daughters-in-law, Christina and Jennifer, and six grandchildren - Hannah, Chloe, Aidan, Tristan, Cate and Kaden. She will be remembered as a funny, tough, loyal, loving, quiet sister, Mom and Grandma. She will be missed by all who knew her. We, her family, are beyond blessed to have been the recipients of her unconditional love.
