53 year resident of Los Gatos, Lawrence Robert Mark (95) passed away November 15, 2017 from a stroke he had on Veteran’s day. He was surrounded by his daughter, Judy Young and daughter in law, Robin Jones-Mark.
Born August 7, 1922 in Chicago, IL to Katherine and Henry Marks. At age 7 moved to Queens, NY and graduated from John Adams High School with honors in mathematics and science. Received a partial scholarship to Columbia University but was unable to afford to go. He became very interested in amateur radio and spent a lot of time reading about design and construction of transmitting and receiving equipment. Later he received his commercial radio transmission license. Using his license, he began work at American Airlines in their Communication Dept. and worked his way into their apprentice program in Aeronautical Engineering at New York State University. This was cut short by WWII. Larry joined the Army Air Corps for the next 3 years specializing in airborne radar, navigator, communication op & tech, sharp shooter. He covered N. Atlantic and N. Europe and held rank of Sergeant. He was enlisted in the Aviation Cadet Officers training program and had to complete his college degree in an accelerated program at Butler University, IN in order to qualify.
In 1943 he married Madeline Foltmann and started a family. After the war, he returned to American to run a radar navigation laboratory defining today’s radar equipment. Next he was responsible for installing and running the first commercial digital computer which became the airline reservation system, Reservisor. In 1953 he joined IBM and worked on various aeronautical and computer assignments. He retired after 35 years and then joined DPI as Director of Marketing and Professional Services for 12 years helping people with disabilities.
Larry was predeceased by his wife Madeline, and children Carol, Robert and Kenny. He is survived by daughter Judy, 7 grandchildren: Loren, Deanne, Duane, Rebecca, Brian, Madison & Quinton and 6 great grandchildren.
Larry‘s passions include his Jaguar, fixing and re-engineering things, woodworking, stock trading, organizing and joke telling.
