Laray Mittie Holland passed away on June 19, 2021, in Campbell, California.
She was born Laray Mittie Anderson on October 3, 1923, in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Birth parents were Homer and Ola Anderson. Laray was later adopted by Jess McGuire, Ola’s second husband.
Laray was the oldest of four siblings, the others were James McGuire, Virginia Ann Reed and Darrell E. McGuire.
Laray went way back. She was a WAC (Women’s Army Corp) during World War 2. A soloist singer with a USO touring dance band during that time, she met husband-to-be Tom Holland, a US Army reconnaissance pilot in the European theater of operations during the war. Not long after that they were married. Tom retired in 1969 as a Colonel after flying helicopters on missions in Vietnam.
Laray attended a master chef’s school in Paris while the family lived at Tom’s duty station in Germany. She often delighted the family over the years with her marvelous holiday feasts.
Darrell McGuire and wife Sylvia and family often visited Laray and her five little poodles in her and Tom’s home in San Jose prior to his death in 1994.
While we were not looking, dementia claimed her mind 12 to 14 years ago and she died alone. One of those long-story family tragedies.
Laray is survived by her grandson Thomas Holland III, her daughters Elizabeth Ann Holland-Sharer and Leslie Robin Holland, and her brother and his wife Darrell and Sylvia McGuire.
She was preceded in death by her sons Thomas Holland Jr. and David Holland, and her husband Thomas Holland.
We will continue to miss Laray as we have since she drifted away from us over a decade ago.
