Tribute to John A. Duffy
John A. Duffy Jr. of Saratoga, age 84, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2017. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan Marie Duffy (McAllister). He is survived by his five children: Joann Reidy (husband Matthew and sons Connor and Brennan), Erin Duffy (husband John and stepdaughter Sara), Jennifer Daley (husband Peter and son Pierce) and his two sons, Keith and Mark, and their families. He is also survived by his sisters Sally Duffy Hughes and Marguerite Duffy McCutcheon and many beloved nieces and nephews.
John was born in 1933 in Philadelphia, PA. He attended West Catholic High School and was a graduate of The United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. He met Joan while vacationing down the Jersey Shore. They fell head over heels in love and married in 1956. His adventures as a Merchant Marine and later as a U.S. Naval Officer took him to the four corners of the world. He had grand stories to tell about it all. Over the years, he worked for many companies including Johnson and Johnson, Texas Instruments, Fairchild Semiconductor, Gavilan Computer and Altera Corporation. He was revered as one of the industry’s finest and most respected leaders. Supporting a variety of catholic charities and causes in his birth-town of Philadelphia and home town of Saratoga was important to him. When a stroke partially limited him some 25 years ago, he found time to drive across the US visiting family and friends, took the family on an African safari, traveled through the Panama Canal and pursued many, many other adventures. He loved the ocean as a man of the sea bringing his family to the Jersey Shore year after year. His family was the center of his life and it gave him great pleasure to be with them, care for them and watch over them. He took generosity with family and friends to new heights. To so many near and far, he was giving and spiritually comforting. Despite his physical limitations, his spirit was bright, ever grateful, brimming with joy for his family, his church and his community. He has finally arrived home united with his beloved Joan. We will miss hearing his voice as he squeezed our hands and told us every day, how much he loved us.
