James Austin White
July 31, 1930-June 15, 2018
Jim was born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI, and graduated from the University of Michigan with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration. He swam for UM for four years and was part of the All-American 400-yard freestyle relay team in 1951. After college his work as a salesman and stock analyst kept him travelling for nine years, including two lengthy trips around the world which including working in Australia at a sheep station in Bendigo and as a securities analyst in Sydney. He went back to UM to get a teaching credential, took a job in Tacoma, Washington, and in 1967, married Margaret Bayha. He taught business classes and coached swimming at Lincoln and Stadium High Schools for 30 years, painting houses every summer. He played handball competitively into his 70s, was a member of the Tacoma Elks Lodge, and was a Sound-to-Narrows “Every-timer” for 40 years, running for the last time just before he and Margaret moved to Saratoga, California, in 2012, to be nearer to children and grandchildren. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in December, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, sister Barbara Wilson, daughters Julia Willsie (John) and Janet Dorling (Roy), son Jeffrey (Mary Ivanauskas) and grandchildren Ryan and Zachary Willsie, Brielle, Trevor and Stefan White, and James and Madeleine Dorling.
