Irene Olsen Crosby passed away on Thursday, February 14th at the age of 92. She
lived a long life full of family, music, and travel.
Irene was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. She graduated from Granite High School in
1945. She attended the University of Utah and served a mission for the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Northern States Mission headquartered in
Chicago. During her mission she shared her secretarial skills by working in the mission
office; and her musical talents by playing the accordion and the piano for conferences.
In 1950 she started working for United Airlines as a stewardess, flying up and down
the California coast. This may have been the beginning of her enthusiasm for travel
that stayed with her the rest of her life. Her love of travel took her to many countries.
She visited every continent except South America and Antartica. Her extensive doll
collection reflected her many travels. Some of her favorite trips included Denmark, a
country of her ancestry, and the more exotic destinations of Africa, India, and Pakistan.
Many of her trips were accompanying her brother Farrel.
She loved music and was a very accomplished pianist. Over the years she taught
both piano and keyboard lessons, sharing her love of music with her students, many of
which she kept in touch. Another hobby she enjoyed was theater and she appeared in
many productions over her lifetime, including several with her daughter Leanne.
A long time resident of the Willow Glen community of San Jose, she started her
career as a secretary for a civil engineering firm on Lincoln Avenue and worked many
years as an engineering assistant for the nuclear power division of General Electric.
She finished her career at San Jose City College where she also received her
