Henry (Hank) Wong

1932 ~ 2020 (age 87)

Tribute

Henry (Hank) Wong, age 87, passed in March 2020. Born and raised in Stockton to immigrant parents, Hank was the youngest of 8 children. He pursued his passion for teaching at San Jose State College. He was a respected and retired teacher/mentor of San Jose Unified School District, teaching Physical Education at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School, Andrew Hill High School, and Bret Harte Junior High School, where he retired from teaching after 36 years. In addition, he taught Drivers Training and worked as a liaison with local dealerships for obtaining vehicles for the program.

Having been raised with the values of working hard and contributing to the community, he worked for the City of San Jose Parks and Recreation for over 50 years. His jobs included various roles - from coaching youth basketball, refereeing games, managing summer swim programs, teaching swim lessons, monitoring the neighborhood garbage clean ups and most recently, assisting people signing into the Almaden Community Center.

A member of the Elks Lodge #522, he enjoyed the company of many of his Elk brothers and sisters; he organized and volunteered for events such as the Hoop Shoot competition, Veteran's Care packages, and selling ice cream at lodge BBQ events.

In addition, Hank supported and advised the local Chinese youth club.

While a healthy and active individual, Hank had Parkinson’s disease which debilitated his movement and speech more so these last few years. For those who knew Hank, he was outgoing, loved to stay active and had the 'gift of gab' (talk). His infectious smile made you feel at ease.  A 'people person', he was always interested in spending time with his family, friends, and former students.

Hank enjoyed good food - generously hosting get togethers, sharing his food finds (fruits, vegetables, fried chicken, bread, doughnuts, etc)  and offering others the experience to try different foods.

Hank was a beloved spouse, father, grandfather, and uncle. He is survived by his children - Lisa Wong-Moranz, Darryl and Eugenia Wong, and Carole and Patrick Wong. His grandchildren include Nicholas and Elissa Moranz (fiancé Nick Dunn), Olivia Wong, Ryan, Spencer and Isabella Wong. Henry was predeceased by his parents, siblings and wife, Nancy, and grandson, Christian. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date. For those wishing to donate In Memory of Hank, the family suggests The Parkinson Association of Northern California, California Retired Teachers Association, Division 6-Scholarships, or a Veterans organization of your choice.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Mission Skilled Nursing and Subacute Center - Santa Clara - for providing quality care and support to Henry as his Parkinson’s progressed and to those who visited and sent cards/food.
