Helene Joan (Hazen) Fitzsimmons
April 8, 1930 - December 31, 2017
Helene Joan (Hazen) Fitzsimmons was a joy. She was born April 8, 1930 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the only child of Homer and Jennie Hazen.
From Michigan, her parents moved back to their homeland in Bellingham, Washington where she enjoyed the camaraderie of family, fishing and traveling to Orcas Island with friends via the mail boat.
She brought her elegant style, twinkly smile, quick wit, and rollicking laugh with her and was snapped up by John Fitzsimmons when they worked in Yellowstone Park during their twentieth summer. Five years later they were married. During their “short” courtship, Helene flew around the world as a Pan Am stewardess. She “lived it up” as Dad often said. Until she gave birth to their first son, Michael, she worked at Allied Properties, putting her husband through law school in San Francisco. Helene and John eventually settled in Los Gatos, California.
Six children became her full-time occupation and love. She was an amazing mother and life partner to her husband, John. Success came easier to John with Mom’s never waning support at home. She was one of those ladies who made the term “at home mom” mean efficiency expert in all capacities. Her high volume gourmet meals rivaled those of the best cruise ships. She supported all family adventures by loading up supplies for last minute ski trips/ beach runs/ ball games. Her love of books, music and art empowered us all to read and explore. Her eclectic book selection filled her with the knowledge to complete most any crossword puzzle in record time.
She and Dad laughed their way through life’s experiences. Humor was their second best friend, next to God. They were able to travel the world for twenty years and did so with no agents other than their own desires. They were both big hikers and often returned to destinations like Grindelwald, Switzerland and Chamonix, France.
When her mother needed them, Helene and John moved to Bellingham for ten years to care for Granny until her death.
They returned to California where Mom’s overriding focus was the health and care of John. In her “spare time” she deftly presided over improvements to their property.
Helene is survived by her beloved husband, John; children: Mike, Dan, Bob, Dave, Linda, Jim; daughters-in-law: Julie, Kathy, Sandy and Therese; grandchildren: Greg (wife Brie and great grandson, Duke), Robbie, Tyler, Zachary, Nelson, Dylan, Holly, Michelle, Paige, Noah, Elijah, Delaney, Mauren, Jenna; great-granddaughter on the way; caregivers and dear friends: Elzbieta, Agnieska, Frehiwot; former spouses: Jeannie and Don.
We thank you for loving us all so. We love you and are eternally grateful for your loving spirit.
