Gloria Ann Dickens was born December 10, 1951 to Costroma Dickens and Louise Dickens in Kentfield, California. Gloria was raised in Marin City, California. She accepted Christ Jesus as her personal Savior at Marin City Church of God now known as the Inter-Cities Fellowship.
Gloria attended Richardson Bay Junior High School in Sausalito, California. She graduated from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, California. Gloria attended College of Marin in Kentfield, California. Then she transferred to and graduated from Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and was a member of the sorority Delta Sigma Theta, Chapter Lambda Delta.
Gloria worked at the Salt Lake City, Utah County Jail as “Own Recognizance (OR)” Specialist for five years. Later she worked in the Santa Cruz, California County Jail for six years as OR Specialist. Then she retired from the San Mateo County Jail as an OR Specialist.
Gloria met Tyrome Garrison in Las Vegas and fell in love. They were married December 27, 1980. To this union of 39 years came two children: Kadesha “Hillary” in 1985 and Tymon three years later. Gloria and her beloved husband were excited and delighted to have grandchildren: Elias J. Garrison and Layla S. Marquez. They affectionately called her “Granny.” Gloria loved her grandchildren unconditionally. They were the apple of her eye.
Gloria was a praying woman of God; and a woman of faith. Over the years Gloria has served the Body of Christ (the church) in myriad of ways. Specifically, she was a children Sunday School teacher at Bethel Assemblies of God, San Jose, California for over 10 years.
Gloria enjoyed shopping, travelling and eating different foods. She loved her annual summer trip to Indiana to visit her best friend, Barbara Berry. Gloria claimed Pierre’s (Barbara youngest son) three children as her “Indiana grandkids.” They called her “grandma Gloria.” Gloria’s oldest Berry grandchild is Alexa (Howard Jr.’s daughter) whom both Gloria and Tyrome affectionately called “baby girl.” She was at Alexa’s birth and was the first to hold and bless her.
Gloria was fun loving and could laugh at anything. In another aspect, she could be very serious. Throughout her illness she was firm in her faith. Gloria Garrison departed this life and went to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, January 2, 2022 at Good Samaritan Hospital, San Jose, California.
The family would like to appreciate Gloria’s “adopted mother,” Gloria Porter who stayed with Gloria months at a time. She cooked whatever Gloria wanted to eat and was ever present helping and watching over Gloria. Also, a huge “thanks” to Howard Berry Jr. who drove from Vacaville to San Jose every other week to take Gloria to Saturday Chemo appointments.
Gloria is preceded in death by her mother, father, brother: Charles Dickens, and her beloved husband of 39 years, Tyrome Garrison.
