Tribute

"World!s Fastest Austrian" Gerry Steiner Has Passed Away
Gerry Steiner, a native of Vienna, Austria, passed away
unexpectedly December 31st. He was 81. The San Jose,
California resident was a fixture in our community and hearts. He
was my dad, my rock, and my best friend.
His passion was racing. The former Goodguys VRA Top Fuel
Champion had his best season behind the wheel came in 2003
when he and his crew chief Brad Berger won the Goodguys VRA
Top Fuel World Title. It was a dream season for my dad, Gerry
Steiner who ran more 5-second passes than any other competitor
that calendar year. In addition to his championship that season,
he also joined the exclusive Goodguys “5- Second Club.”
My dad moved to America from Vienna, Austria with his mother in
1956 and quickly got hooked into the post-war hot rodding scene
running a series of drag cars. He returned to racing in the 1980s
driving the legendary "Mooneyham and Sharp” 1934 Fuel Coupe
at early Nostalgia meets. He then produced his own Front
Engined Top Fuel Dragster finding success and big speeds during
his resurgent career throughout the 90s and into the new
millennium. He was known for his "never lift” style of driving often
on the verge of losing control. His primary goal at each event he
entered was to win but he often settled for running the fastest
speed of the meet which he probably did over 75% of the time. He
was always big on mph.
This is a small glimpse into the man I was so honored to call my
dad. He gave me a lifetime of experiences and I will always
treasure them all.
Gerry Steiner is survived by his loyal daughter Gerilyn (Steiner)
Serauskis, his son-in-law Edward Serauskis, his granddaughters
Ellie Serauskis and Gigi Serauskis, his son Matthew McNerney.
A celebration of life will be held when Covid-19 protocols expire.
Because he deserves a big party!!
I love you forever dad… and as you loved to always say…
“I had a good run.”
