Gary Dean Phillips was born in Rockford, Illinois, on May 3, 1943, to Hubert L. and Arlene D. Murray Phillips, both deceased. He passed away peacefully on July 25, 2018, surrounded by his family.
Gary was a loving and devoted husband for 51 years to Linda, father to Kevin (Lisa) and Susan, grandpa to Jordan and Peyton Phillips, and brother to Sheryl (Louis) Hein of Iowa. Gary is also survived by his loving aunts, Berna Deane Benter and Connie Murray, both of Iowa, and many nieces, cousins, and friends.
Gary grew up in Delhi, Iowa, graduating as valedictorian from Maquoketa Valley High School. He earned his BS and MS in electrical engineering with distinction from the University of Iowa and was a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan, attending two Rose Bowls in Pasadena, an Outback Bowl in Tampa Bay, Florida, and a Capitol One Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Gary was also a member of ROTC, Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi, and regent (president) of Theta Tau.
Gary and Linda were married in Iowa, after both graduating from the University of Iowa. Gary worked for a short time at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown, Iowa. By this time, their two children were born. The family moved to California in 1973, and Gary and Linda raised their children in San Jose.
Gary spent most of his career as a design engineering manager at National Semiconductor, making lifelong friends along the way. His two grandsons were his special joy. In addition to assisting with practices and scorekeeping when he could, he attended most of their baseball games, water polo games, karate classes, swim meets, gymnastics programs, and wrestling meets.
Gary’s memorial service will be held at Darling and Fischer, Chapel of the Hills, Los Gatos, and celebration of life at Rinconada Hills Clubhouse, Los Gatos.
