Doris Elaine Dyer
Resident of San Jose
Oct. 10, 1927 – Jul. 21, 2019
Doris Elaine Dyer passed away Sunday night with her husband of sixty-four years by her side. She was a gentle, loving and generous soul who devoted her life to caring for others.
Doris was born in Utica, New York, an only child to Mildred and William Heller. She graduated from Marcellus Senior High School, after which she left home, joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corp and earned a degree in Nursing from Syracuse General Hospital Nursing School. Nearing graduation, she worked at Syracuse Hospital, Buffalo Children’s Hospital and the state mental hospital. Upon graduating, she cared for premature infants at Syracuse Hospital and then traveled to California where she was hired by Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles. She later returned to NY and worked as a registered nurse at General Electric, meeting her future husband there. She raised her family in NY and then in CA, where she returned to nursing in Santa Clara County until her retirement.
Doris was very active and she enjoyed travel, camping, water skiing, ice skating, playing piano, reading, card games and listening to big band music. She treasured her many friendships and kept in touch with close friends, some for over 70 years. Doris was modest, unassuming and good-natured, and she had a strong faith that held her to believe always in the goodness of others.
Doris is survived by her adoring husband, Joseph, by her devoted children, Mark, Susan, Mary and Nancy, and by her beloved granddaughter, Hannah. She joins in the afterlife her fifth child, Billy, and her parents.
Memorial and Celebration of Life service will be held on September 7th, 2019 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Church on the Hill, 500 Sands Drive, San Jose, CA 95125.
