Mr Donald Bird Richardson Jr.

Born in San Francisco on September 2, 1926 to Donald Bird Richardson and Lyla Griffin Richardson, Donald Jr. spent his childhood in San Jose where he attended public school.

He enjoyed playing basketball and was President of his class in high school. He enjoyed playing sports as much as he enjoyed watching them and was an encyclopedia of sports stats and trivia.

Donald attended Stanford University with an undergraduate major in Biology. He was drafted into the Navy during his early years and served as a Pharmacist Mate until returning to Stanford to complete his undergraduate work.

Donald attended Santa Clara University School of Law and began practicing law in San Francisco before following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps to practice law in San Jose. Donald met Marilyn DeCoursey on a blind date in December 1958 and they were married in October of 1959. Eventually they added two children to their family – Bill and Robin.

Donald was active in the San Jose community serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Central YMCA and as a member of the Downtown San Jose Rotary Club where he also served 1 year as President in the late 1980’s. He would cite as his biggest accomplishments during his year as President the introduction of women members into the Rotary Club as well as the capital campaign that helped finance the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose.

In his 50’s Donald and some friends formed a running group that trained for and completed six marathons including Montreal and multiple New York marathons.

Donald enjoyed planning family road trips when his children were young. He and Marilyn traveled to Europe over the years and had exciting adventures in Japan, Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt, Turkey and the British Isles.

Donald retired from practicing law in December of 2000 after a stroke. He passed away Monday April 23rd. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marilyn DeCoursey Richardson and his two children Bill Richardson and Robin Richardson Calkins, both whom live in the greater Bay Area.
