Dolores Jean (Graves) Ransom (1928-2022)

On April 4th, 2022, at the age of 93, Dolores Jean Ransom came to the end of a long and exemplary life. She entered the world--Rock Island, Illinois, to be precise--on September 15, 1928, the 4th of what would be eight children born to Samuel and Rosalie (née Baur) Graves. Jean grew up during the Great Depression, but her father, a pharmacist, managed to keep the family afloat until his death in 1939, whereupon her mother took charge of the business and made sure that it would support the family going forward. Jean, in her teen years, joined her sisters behind the bar of the soda fountain in the drug store, an array that guaranteed customers. After World War II ended, one such customer was Orville Ransom, who was so smitten with Jean that he converted to Catholicism in order to marry her; they wed on 13 August 1949. Nine children came along in due course. Initially, Orv and Jean lived in a trailer, but they soon bought a lovely house in Moline, close to Rock Island, with mulberry trees on one side and on the other a neighbor’s rhubarb garden. Jean made wonderful rhubarb pie. In 1959 the family, now eight in number, moved to Atherton, California, and lived in a portion of a grand house occupied by her older brother Ed and his (large) family. While there, Jean bore two more children, and she learned to drive. In 1965 she once again had a house of her own, in Los Gatos, very close to St. Mary’s church and grade school. This house became home for almost the next fifty years, adorned by Jean’s remarkable gift for domestic decoration, filled with the aromas of delicious meals, and graced by her quiet and loving presence. She gave birth to her ninth child in 1967. Later, for a few years, she served as caretaker for her aging mother. Later still, she made regular visits to the old and infirm in St. Mary’s parish. After Orv died in 2012, Jean stayed in the house until she herself needed supervised care. While in her new residence, she enjoyed frequent visits from her children (and spouses) and grandchildren, and excursions to the homes of her daughter Marla and her youngest son Andrew, both of whom lived quite close to her. She is survived by her children: Thomas (wife Carol and children Stephen and Kylie); Daniel (wife Janis and son David); Ramon (sons Jacob, John, †James, and Michael); Marla (husband Amir Cyrus and children Kristin and Mark); Brian; Paul (wife Debbie; children Jessica, Nolan, and Alex), Lori (husband Stephen Van Unen and children Daniel and Michael); Alan (daughters Danielle and Chloe); and Andrew (wife Susie and children Emily, Isaac, and Glenn).
