Carolyn May McWhirter

November 15, 1928 ~ April 26, 2022 (age 93)



Carolyn May McWhirter was born on November 15, 1928 in Oakland, CA to Frieda & Arthur Irwin. She spent her childhood enjoying summers in Yosemite with her parents & her late brother, Richard, taking dancing lessons & then graduating from Richmond High School. Carolyn worked in women's retail for many years starting with owning & managing a women's clothing boutique store – Mode O'Day in a suburb of Chicago, IL in the 1950s to early 1960s. She greatly enjoyed working as a manager of several women's clothing departments in the high fashion luxury department store I. Magnin of Cupertino from the time that the store opened in the 1970s until its permanent closure. She loved emceeing fashion shows, assisting customers & creating lifelong friendships with her coworkers.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her devoted & loving husband of twenty-five years, John McWhirter, as well as her beautiful daughter, Marilyn Lynch. She was the loving matriarch of a large family & is survived by five children – Chris (Joyce) Provencher, Michelle (Jure) Sola, Greg (Karen) Provencher, Glen Swank, Mark (Anya) Swank, stepson Bill McWhirter, ten grandchildren – Wendy, Shannon, Martina, Nikola, Monika, Rochelle, Jessica, Alexa, Kristen, Sabrina, & six great-grandchildren – Clay, Aedan, Luka, Sebastian, Adeline & Augustine. Carolyn said that her biggest accomplishment was raising her six children.

When she & her late husband, John, retired from their careers they enjoyed traveling in the United States, Canada & Europe however their favorite place was always in Mendocino, CA. Carolyn took up gardening, lkebana flower arranging & water color painting in her sixties & seventies proving to be an exceptional artist. Carolyn loved meeting new people, entertaining, & being a part of her children's lives. She & John had great fun attending Austin Healey & Mercedes Benz car club meets as well as tailgating & attending football games at John's alma mater UC Berkeley.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to longtime caretaker & dearest friend, Kari Archer, as well as the staff in Memory Care at the Saratoga Retirement Community for their wonderful care of Carolyn.

Services will be held on May 4th at 11am at Darling Fischer, 615 N Santa Cruz Ave, Los Gatos, CA 95030.

Burial services will be held immediately following at Madronia Cemetery at 14766 Oak Street, Saratoga, CA.
