Betty Sanchez was born to her parents Lee and Amelia Hernandez on August 30, 1939 in San Jose, California. She was the first born and the eldest of her sisters, Jane, Helen, and Martha.

Betty attended school in San Jose and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. Her first job was working at the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum. Betty met the love of her life, Bernabe “Ben” Sanchez, at church when they were young. They married in 1959, started a family, and in 1963 purchased their first and only house that they lived in together for the rest of their lives.

She was very active in all her children’s activities, helping with Brownies & Girl Scouts, being the room mom for many classrooms, a PTA mom, the “team” mom for many little league baseball teams, baking cookies for school carnivals, and nearly winning the marathon dance fundraiser at Westmont High School.

She also loved teaching and tutored thousands of students in every subject. Being bilingual, Betty often taught math and other subjects in Spanish to students who needed translation assistance. She enjoyed a 27 year career as a teacher in the Moreland School District.

Because of this long-standing career, she was well known around the Santa Clara Valley. Often she would be approached by former students at restaurants or while shopping. They would all be so happy to see her and would have similar stories about how she helped them with math, or English, or sometimes even how she helped them get through a tough time in their lives.

Beyond her career as a teacher, she was also well known for her flower business. Betty loved flowers, and had a natural green thumb her whole life. She started her own business as a florist during her summers off of school, where she enjoyed providing beautiful creations and memories for hundreds of weddings and funerals across the Santa Clara Valley over the years.

When Betty wasn’t working, she and her family loved going up to Lake Tahoe for vacations during the summer and winter, where they would enjoy skiing or swimming in the lake.

Betty was part of a close-knit group of neighbors who became good friends. Often during the summers there could be 30 people in her backyard swimming, eating and laughing. She loved hosting holidays and other events at her home for her friends, neighbors and relatives. So many birthdays, holidays, graduations, and celebrations happened in her house with Ben and Betty providing a loving welcome and meal to everyone who came.

Betty died on the morning of March 31, 2022 - 82 years of a full and beautiful life spent with the ones she loved and she will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter Sandra Wenzel and son-in-law Matt Wenzel, her son James Sanchez, her son Anthony Sanchez and daughter-in-law Gina DiSanto-Sanchez, as well as her sisters Jane Hernandez and Martha Nevarez. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Danielle, and husband Valdemar, Sandoval, Jessica and Samantha Wenzel, Leah, Ashley, Joey, Josh, Lucas, Brett, and Mary Sanchez, and her great-grandchildren Mateo and Leandro Sandoval, and Alexandria Furtado.

Friends and family are invited to her funeral service in the Legacy Garden Gazebo on Saturday, April 16 at 10:00 A.M. at Los Gatos Memorial Park at 2255 Los Gatos-Almaden Road, San Jose, CA.
