Barbara Hawkins was born and grew up in Oakdale, California. She was the descendent of California Gold Rush pioneers on both her mother’s and father’s side. As a child, her family often drove to Yosemite’s High Country where she learned to fish, hike and developed a love of the outdoors. She met her future husband, Ray Hawkins, while a teenager. They married in her parent’s garden setting backyard. Together they moved to various Bay Area locations to follow Ray’s career. Finally settling in Los Gatos in 1963 when Ray accepted a position with IBM San Jose.
She had a gift for bringing joy to others with her radiant smile and ability to listen with an open heart. Laughing was easy for her. She loved a good joke, ice cream and chocolate covered almonds.
At her request, her cremains will be scattered in Yosemite’s High Country. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, no Celebration of Life is currently scheduled.
Preceded in death by her husband, Ray, she is survived by her children Carolyn Bryant (Kip), Dorothy Schumacher (Michael) and Edward Hawkins (Amanda), her sister Betty Canote, four grandsons and 7 great grandchildren.
