  • Our History

Darling & Fischer Mortuaries was founded in 1931 by Rev. Roger Darling with Darling Funeral Home on the corner of 10th and Santa Clara streets in San Jose California. Clyde Fischer purchased the funeral home from Rev. Darling and Darling Funeral Home became Darling & Fischer Garden Chapel. Clyde was an active member of the community serving as San Jose mayor from 1932-1937 and on the city council in the 1960's. Clyde was instrumental in establishing Hands Across the Border providing school and medical supplies to Mexico. He adopted the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Orphanage in Mexicali, Mexico and provided funding and supplies for many years.

Clyde's son Jack joined the business in 1944. They expanded the family business by opening the Memorial Chapel in downtown Campbell in 1953 and Chapel of the Hills in downtown Los Gatos in 1954. In 1978 they purchased Los Gatos Memorial Park to provide burial and cremation options for the community. Jack Fischer's son, Jeff, joined the business in 1976 after graduating from Cal Poly. Jeff continued the family tradition of community involvement and serves on the Board of Directors of Good Samaritan Hospital, the San Jose/Evergreen Community College Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the Evergreen School District.

In 1998 Darling & Fischer merged with Carriage Services of California to provide added value to the families we serve. The Fischer family continues to be active in the business and community. Darling & Fischer cares about the families we serve and our community. Our staff of professional directors has experience compassionately caring for families during one of the most difficult times in their lives. In 1931, the Reverend Roger Darling founded the Darling Funeral Home at 10th and Santa Clara Streets in San Jose, Ca.  Clyde Fischer, after returning home from the war,  purchased the funeral home from Reverend Darling and added the Fischer name to the Garden Chapel, as it would then be known.  Clyde was Mayor of San Jose from 1932-1937 and was again a city council member in the 1960's.  Clyde was instrumental in starting a project called Hands Across the Border, where school and Medical supplies were shipped to Mexico on a continual basis.  He also adopted the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Orphanage in Mexicali, Mexico, to which he provided funding and supplies for many years.

Jack Fischer, after attending college, joined his father in 1944 and proceeded to expand the family business.  In 1953 they purchased a building in downtown Campbell, Ca. and opened the Darling-Fischer Campbell Memorial Chapel.  In 1954 they purchased land in Los Gatos, Ca. and built the Darling-Fischer Chapel of the Hills.  They purchased Los Gatos Memorial Park in 1978, which provided burial and cremation options to families that they served in the community.  In 1986, the Fischer family opened Fischer's Garden Florist in Willow Glen to provide families an opportunity to do floral designs for their services.

The third generation, Jeff Fischer, joined the firm in 1976 after graduating from Cal Poly with a degree in Finance and Business.  Jeff became President of Darling-Fischer in 1982.  Jeff is active in a number of community organizations and is on the Board of Directors of Good Samaritan Hospital, the San Jose/Evergreen Community College Foundation and has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Evergreen School District for over 27 years.  In 1998 the family merged with Carriage Services of California to provide added value to the families they serve.  The Fischer family continues to be active in the business to this day providing quality funeral and cremation services and options to over 1800 families annually.
