Mrs. Shirley Bowman Hilton passed away peacefully during the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 26. 2017. She was at the El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, California.
She was born August 2, 1930 in Blackfoot, Idaho of William Earl and Zina Campbell Bowman. She was only 12 years old when her mother died. She continued to live and go to school in Idaho for a few years. When she was 17, she got a summer job at West Yellowstone and met the Pete and Faye Piersanti family from Ogden, Utah. That fall she moved to Ogden with the Piersanti’s. She graduated from High school there in 1948. She attended Weber Junior College and Utah State Agricultural College (USU) graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a teaching certificate. She accepted a teaching position at Delta High in Delta, Utah without ever visiting the town. She actually signed the contract verbally over the telephone.
She taught school at Delta for 5 years and then one quarter at Dixie Junior College in St. George before she was married. In Delta she developed an annual dance recital that included most of the students at Delta High. She married W. Bruce Hilton on December 21, 1957 in the LDS Temple in Saint George, Utah. Within a couple of years they moved the entire family to California residing in Sunnyvale and Saratoga with a four-year spell in Edzell, Scotland. Together they raised eight sons, seven of which survive her.
She was a fantastic homemaker and artist. Her fried chicken and gravy are famous. None of her family have been able to duplicate it. No one ever left her home hungry. Shirley was generous of spirit. She was an avid supporter of her sons in their many activities as they grew to manhood. She helped the teams and enjoyed watching the soccer, baseball, tennis, or basketball games that they were playing in. She rarely missed a game. She continued her love of sports with watching the professional Earthquakes, Warriors, Giants, Forty-Niners, and professional tennis through the years.
Each of the boys learned to play the piano and all but one of them played an instrument in the Junior High and High School bands.
Shirley is survived by her husband, daughters-in-law and seven sons: William, Brent (JoAnn Doyle), Gary (Nancy Hilton), Bruce (Mariann Hilton), Brian, Shaun (Juli Christopher) and Russell (MaryAnn Vasquez). She has 23 grandchildren. Her parents preceded her in death and her son, Richard, her sisters, Donna Wellard and unnamed baby sister, and brothers, Edward, Gail, and William and Keith, Kay, and Kent as infants.
No formal funeral service is planned. However, there will be a viewing August 2, 2017 from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Darling & Fischer Chapel of the Hills on 615 North Santa Cruz Avenue Los Gatos to meet with family members. Following the viewing, interment will be at the Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga, California at 2:00 p.m.
