Marie Susanna Moss
December 13, 1922 to August 31, 2017
Marie Susanna Moss (Weis) passed away early Thursday morning, August 31, 2017, in San Jose, California. She was 94 years old.
She was born on the family farm outside of Roscoe, Minnesota on December 13, 1922, to Michael and Margaret Weis. Her mother died a year and a half after her birth, leaving her to be raised by her dad, aunt and big brother and sister. After high school, as World War II was getting underway, she joined the armed forces as a Navy Wave, and was stationed at various bases throughout the United States, training pilots in instrument flying. While stationed in Gainesville, Georgia, she met the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Moss, who was also in the Navy. They were married in Denver, Colorado on January 2, 1946. After the war, Dick and Marie moved to Boulder, Colorado, where Dick would go to college, and they would start their family. In 1956, they moved to San Jose, California with their three kids, and bought the home where they would live the rest of their lives. Marie devoted most of her early adult life to raising their three children, then went on to have a productive career working for the California State Rehabilitation Department. She and Dick traveled extensively throughout the world. She especially loved Switzerland and the Swiss Alps. She dearly loved her family (including her dog Hanna), and was a wonderful, loving influence in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many others, all of whom loved her very, very much.
Marie is survived by her children, Lynn Moss (Thomas Pizzillo), Richard “Dick” (Charlene) Moss, John “Jack” (Donna) Moss. She has three grandchildren, Richard “Skip” (Sommer) Moss, Lauren Moss, and Michael Moss (Ilenia Perez) and two great grandchildren Finn and Ania Moss. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister Margaret “Maggie” Schwagel and her brother Alois “Wishy” Weis.
In the later years of her life she was cared for by her family and a team of very loving caregivers led by Arlene Catalbas. She also received thoughtful and kind treatment by the nurses and doctors of Good Samaritan Hospital.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., September 15, 2017, at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 15333 Woodard Road, San Jose, CA 95124. A reception will be held after Mass.
