Evelyn, 91, entered into rest on July 19, 2017 in San Jose, CA. after a long illness. Family members were present at the time of her passing.
Born in Santa Barbara, CA. Aug. 3, 1925. The daughter of Martin and Edith Tompkins. She grew up in Santa Barbara and graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1943. She had two sisters, Marylou and Claire (both deceased). Growing up some of her favorite times were vacations spent with family in Yosemite. Though her mother taught piano, she insisted Evelyn play the violin.
Evelyn was married in 1944 to Russell Paige, Sr., they had three children. In 1954 she married Douglas Ayres and they had two children. She enjoyed making Halloween costumes for her children and being involved in their many activities.
She moved to Los Gatos, CA. and continued raising her children as a single parent. She returned to college and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education at San Jose State. She began working for the Moreland School District as a Speech Therapist and was “Teacher of the Year” in 1985. In June of 1995 she became “First Vice President” of the CA. Retired Teachers Association, and on June 5th 1998 she was elected president.
Evelyn enjoyed spending time with family and friends and always kept us laughing with her antics. She loved to travel, and her adventures included trips throughout the United States, Europe, going to Australia, New Zealand and visiting family in Nova Scotia. She enjoyed sewing and was well-known for her outrageous costumes worn to various parties with co-workers. She also knit and made many baby caps for the hospital pediatric ward, as well as scarves, hats, and pot holders for her family.
Evelyn is survived by her devoted children, Nancy Moore (Bob), Russell Paige (Beth) of San Jose, CA., Laura Marsh (Frank)of Kauai, Barbara Harrison (Graeme) of Boise, ID., Martin Ayres (Teresa) of Cocoa, FL. and grandchildren, Bobby and Kristi Moore, Chris and Amy Paige, and Alexa and Kate Harrison.
When someone you love becomes a memory that memory becomes a treasure. She is our treasure.
